For over two thousand
years, the Chinese have practiced the art of "pun-sai" now
known as "penjing." Medicinal plants were first grown in
containers so they could be easily transported.
The Chinese Art of penjing is noted for its
unique style of animal designs such as dragons and birds made
from the small branches of the miniature trees.
These trees are not just miniatures of larger
trees. These miniatures are actually regular plants whose roots
and crowns are carefully pruned to achieve the particular style
of bonsai.
There is a difference in the Chinese style and
the Japanese style. Penjing is also known as scenery on trays.
The Chinese art represents more that a miniature version of a
tree. It can also depict a small landscape. These landscapes
feature miniature brooks and/or mountains with the trees.
There are three types of penjing:
Tree Penjing: This art form is similar
to the Japanese in that it dwarfs trees to fit into small
pots or containers.
Landscape Penjing: This type
of art form uses rocks to depict mountainous regions beyond the
miniature tree.
Water & Landscaping
Penjing: This type makes use of three elements: the
tree, rocks, and water.
The bonsai form is considered spiritual in the
Chinese culture. It is believed that the closer man gets
to nature, the better they can understand themselves. This is
exhibited in the act of pruning, cultivating, and tending the
plant.
The act of creating these beautiful pieces of
art is said to be serene. If you are looking for a stress-free
hobby, this may be the one for you.
