Just as starting any
gardening project, there are basic tools you will need for
developing and caring for your bonsai. If bonsai is new for you
as a hobby, you do not want to invest in a lot of tools or
expensive tools. You should make sure this is a hobby you will
enjoy and continue.
To get started, here is a list of basic
tools:
Bonsai Wire Cutters
The branches and trunk of a bonsai are shaped
using wire to position them in a particular style. Standard
wire cutters you find at your local garden store or hardware
store can be used to cut the wire to position and shape your
bonsai. These wire cutters should not be used to remove
the wire from your bonsai plant. Bonsai wire cutters have
short, small blades and will not harm your plant when the
wire is being removed.
Knob Cutter
This tool is used to quickly remove unwanted
wood stubs from your plant. It can be used to contour the trunk
or branch into its final shape. This tool is known as a melon
ball cutter.
Bud scissors
Bud scissors are a short, bladed tool with
finger holes used to trim leaves, small branches, and buds.
This tool is used because you can cut with it efficiently
without damaging adjacent parts of your plant.
Concave Pruner
This is the most essential bonsai tool you will
need. It is used to cut branches in a way that promotes quick
and leveled healing of the wound.
Root Hooks
To maintain your bonsai, you will need to
remove soil and untangle roots. There are various types of root
hooks with single and multiple hooks. The single hook tool is
less likely to damage your plant than the multiple hook
tools.
For the beginning bonsai grower, the concave
pruner and a pair of bud scissors are essential. When you
develop more expertise, you will want to add other tools.
Creating, growing, pruning, and all-around care
of bonsai requires patience and dedication. You need the right
tools for the job.
