When you walk through a garden store or florist shop with
bonsai trees on display, you will see many varieties. Some are
flowering and others just have leaves. When you are
starting out with bonsai as a hobby, you need to think
about the type of tree with which you can expect some success.
The most recommended tree for beginners is the Jade tree.
The Jade tree is a tropical plant. It is a succulent
from South Africa. It is also known as the Small Leaf Jade or
Elephant Plant. This tree develops more quickly than other
types of bonsai. The trunk is extensive. Compared to other
types, this tree doesn't need to be watered often because it
holds water in its thick leaves, branches, and the trunk.
The Jade tree needs to have proper care. Since it is a
tropical plant, it should be kept inside if you live in a cold
climate. If you live in a warm area, it can be an outdoor
plant. For this plant, the soil should be moist so be careful
when watering it. Do not overwater.
When the tree is young, its bark is green.
As it matures, the bark turns reddish brown and then to a
slate gray color. The leaves are fleshy and have a
blue-green color which produces bunches of star-shaped
pinkish to purple flowers during autumn. The thick and
slender trunk and branches create beautiful cascades.
Pruning and shaping is an essential part of the care of this
tree. Pruning keeps the trunk strong and reduces the leaf size.
If you reduce the trunk, this will encourage new growth from
the wound after a week or two. You should pinch gently on the
trunk and branches because the Jade tree is soft and
delicate.
When the branches are full of water, they become turgid. The
Jade tree responds well to wiring and can be contoured into new
shapes within three to four weeks. Be careful with the wiring
because the branches can snap if they are bent too much. Prior
to wiring the plant, be conservative in watering it.
The Jade tree should be repotted every two years. Before
repotting, make sure the soil is completely dry. This activity
should take place in early spring. Place your newly repotted
plant in a shady place until you see new growth. After that,
water it as usual.
When you see the success you have with the Jade tree, you
may want to try another type of plant for your bonsai
gardening.
